Elon Musk quietly donates $480K to help Flint, MI schools get access to clean water

Way back April of 2014, Flint started to have water crisis. The crisis began when the source for drinking water was transferred from Lake Huron and Detroit River to the Flint River.

Lead pipes were used in the new system but there was an insufficient water treatment which later on led to lead leaking into the citizens’ drinking water making it unsafe. The lead contamination led to various illnesses.

There was an estimate of 6000-12,000 children exposed to the contaminated water and they showed to have elevated blood levels which increased for about 5% by 2015. One of fatalities is the outbreak of Legionnaire’s Disease.

Walmart, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and Nestle started donating bottled waters to schools because children and teachers because they felt it to be unsafe to drink from the water fountains provided in the school.

Elon Musk tweeted on his twitter account back in July expressing how he will be helping the citizens of Flint get an access to a safe and clean drinking water.

After the expression of his heartfelt desire, he remained silent until recently when the Musk Foundation, founded by Elon and Kimbal Musk back in 2002, donated $480,350 to school buildings in Flint to help them install ultraviolet water filtration systems. The filtration system works by using an ultraviolet water purification method.

This method will sterilize the water from any bacteria and lead which were coming from the lead pipes. MLive News broadcasted Musk . In the broadcast, Derrick Lopez (Superintendent of Flint Community Schools) said that the money Musk donated was enough to pay for ultraviolet water filtration systems in twelve (12) schools and even for the administration building in the district.

He expressed how Musk’s movement will significantly impact the students. The installation is expected to be completed by the month of January in the coming year of 2019.

“We are deeply grateful for the generosity and the budding partnership between Flint Community Schools, the Musk Foundation and Elon Musk. The new water filtration systems will be instrumental in helping our students return to the normalcy of what should be a fundamental right: having access to safe, clean water from water fountains in their school,” Lopez said.

The board president of the Flint School, Diana Wright expressed her gratitude to the Musk Foundation for its bequest as well, she said that “students in Flint Community Schools have access to safe drinking water at the source — in drinking fountains — by way of the same type of water filtration system used by hospitals and colleges in Flint.”

Finally, they would no longer have to fear drinking from the drinking fountains and no longer shall they drink from bottled waters.

Students from Flint Schools would not miss a beat as well. They themselves thanked and acknowledged Musk’s act of kindness by posting or tweeting on their official Flint Schools account in Twitter.

The infamous young activist called “Little Miss Flint”, Mari Copeny expressed how she looks forward to Musk doing more in the future. After the very much announced aid by Elon Musk, he continues to reach out to the city in a discreet manner, cameras out.
